FAQ: Insurance

Do you have insurance? Are you on your ex-husband’s insurance?

Yes, I have insurance. No, I’m not on my ex-husband’s insurance. When our divorce was finalized I had to secure my own insurance. I did so via the Virginia Healthcare Marketplace. (PSA: I will not tolerate people speaking ill of the Affordable Care Act ever again.)

My insurance has been great so far. My core team is at the Inova Schar Cancer Center in Fairfax, VA. So far the only people who are not are my plastic surgeon and my colorectal surgeon. I am VERY lucky to have access to a world-class cancer center locally.

The only times my insurance has given me bumps so far is, like, twice. Once when I couldn’t use an in-house plastic surgeon and once had to go outside the facility and another for something I can’t even remember.

My insurance does not, however, cover Memorial Sloan Kettering or MD Anderson, or any out-of-state provider. I called MSK and MD Anderson when I learned about my second diagnosis, but I feel like I’m in great hands where I am and if we need to go there for any reason we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

I am so, so lucky to be where I am and be covered how I am.
